Introduction to Critical Literacy

This text was produce by JR Martin (1987).It was written for people in professional field especially for lawyer because as a lawyer, they should know the differences between facts and stories to find out evidence. In 1st chapter was covered about the differences between stories and facts writing. In my understanding, started with recount sub topic is about a type of story in which people communicate by questioning " What has happened to them?" . It is built up around our society and there have divided into two which is spoken and writing.

Spoken will be define as personal statement while writing will be define as impersonal statement. Procedure writing is a general cohesion from specific events, explanation and how things are done. Procedures often contain the closest type of factual writing to narrative and the text are build up around a sequence of events. The next Sub topic in this chapter is about the report writing. Report writing is a classes of things rather than individual. It will makes general and not specific statement. Report writing function in our culture is to share information but not to explain something.

On the other hand, Creativity writing and imagination writing is not included in report writing but it is factual writing. Factual writing have to follow the procedure, the description and the report given. But, factual and narrative writing are different. Factual writing is not wren by narrative but by the creative and imaginative person. The main function of the factual writing is to explore something but not to entertain compare to narrative writing. The major problem is, most of the children are learning factual genres. In this topic also cover about the developing report writing and the explanation about 3 basic type of factual writing.

This is the fist time we are going to write about the first portfolio for "Convicted killer back to work" article. First trial is quite difficult because we are learn to be in critical thinking. For me the most challenging part in the port folio is in part writing the purpose and the positioning. I always stuck here and to continue to the next question I will be blur. I don't know why. After get consultation with my lecturer, I think I learn something new which is try to be critical thinking when reading an article. The next agenda is about my friends presentation about the first topic. I think it is not too bad because I still can understand what they are presented about. But I think, it is better get a further explanation by the lecturer and the presented group must supply their hardcopy to student to make a further study about the topic presented.
